On the doorstep

Why are you standing in the doorway? Why don't you just come in? You're not going in or out. There's a weird, sticky atmosphere in the air that doesn't even want to sit down and stick to the old lockers. It hangs in the air. The cold air pulls into the little room, and the arms are open. All you do is stare at it—at the arms. You make the arms wait until they start to hurt so much that you forget that the hug was warm before. What are you afraid of in that warmth? What are you afraid of in this world? You stand on the threshold. The door won't open or close. I can't leave the room, and I can't enter it. Someone is standing on the threshold.
